«Рыболовная экспедиция». Во времена Британской империи это выражение обозначало поездку в Индию или в какой-либо другой аванпост империи, чтобы найти себе супруга среди размещённых там военнослужащих. Позже оно стало обозначать попытку достать важную, часто секретную информацию, делая вид, что интересуешься чем-то совершенно незначительным. В сфере современного бизнеса фирмы иногда интервьюируют сотрудников из другой компании, якобы собираясь предложить им работу, а на самом деле, чтобы осведомиться о планах конкурента.

John invited me to dinner on Friday, not because he enjoys my company, but because his boss wants to find out about my firm's plans. John's on a fishing expedition. — Джон пригласил меня на обед в пятницу не потому, что он получает удовольствие от моего общества, а потому, что его начальник хочет узнать о планах моей фирмы.
